What is mechanical debridement of bed sores?

Mechanical debridement of bed sores involves packing the open wound with damp dressings.  When the dressing dry out they are pulled from the wound along with the (hopefully) dead tissue.  This can be a painful process due to the fact that bits of live skin may actually be removed along with the dead tissue.
