Given the prevalence of bed sores in nursing homes, hospitals and other care facilities, it is not surprising that the number of organizations established to service this needy group continues to expand.  Below are some organizations and groups that many of our readers have come to trust when referencing bed sore: care, treatment, prevention and education. 
Advocacy Groups
  • American Board of Wound Management: The American Board of Wound Management (formerly the Academy of Wound Management) is a voluntary, not-for-profit organization established for the purpose of credentialing inter-disciplinary practitioners in the field of wound management.  The Academy certifies professionals as Certified Wound Care Associates (CWCA), Certified Wound Specialist (CWS) and Certified Wound Specialist Physician (CWSP).
  • Nursing Homes Abuse Blog: Legal information to families regarding their legal options following the discovery of poor care in a nursing home, hospital or assisted living facility.
  • National Decubitus Foundation: A site dedicated to eliminating hospital-caused bedsores.  The site was developed by physicians who see the devastation of bedsore first-hand.
  • World Wide Wounds: World Wide Wounds is an organization that helps recommend and give feedback on materials used for wound treatment.

Professional Organizations

  • Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society: the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) is a professional, international nursing society of more than 4,600 health care professionals who are experts in the care of patients with wound, ostomy and incontinence
  • The American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA): A hybrid non-profit organization dedicated to to help decrease the rate of complications from all wounds, including acute, chronic, post surgical, post radiation, reconstructive and other problematic wounds.
  • National Consumer Voice For Long-Term Quality Care: The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care was formed as NCCNHR (National Citizens’ Coalition for Nursing Home Reform) in 1975 because of public concern about substandard care in nursing homes. The Consumer Voice provides information and leadership on federal and state regulatory and legislative policy development and models and strategies to improve care and life for residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
  • National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel: The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) is an independent not-for-profit professional organization dedicated to the prevention and management of pressure ulcers. The NPUAP serves as a resource to health care professionals, government, the public, and health care agencies; and welcomes and encourages the participation of those interested in pressure ulcer issues through utilization of NPUAP educational materials, participation at national conferences, and support of efforts in public policy, education and research.

Specialized Educational Programs

  • La Salle University School of Nursing: La Salle University’s WOCNEP shows nurses how to provide rehabilitative and acute care for people with gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary system disorders.
  • The Wound Institute: The Wound Institute is dedicated to helping clinicians gain more knowledge of wound care treatment and management.
  • University of Virginia Graduate Program in WOC Nursing: The Universiry of Virginia School of Nursing offers WOC training as part of its Masters program or a stand-alone Certification program for students. It combines nursing and help care for and restore health for people with wounds, ostomies and continence problems.
  • European Wound Management Association: Founded in 1991, and the association works to promote the advancement of education and research into native epidemiology, pathology, diagnosis, prevention and management of wounds of all aetiologies.
  • Wound Healing Society: A group formed to help improve wound healing though science, education and communication.
  • National Alliance Of Wound Care: Wound care credentialing certifications beyond licensure  that the ensure practitioner has acquired a core body of specialized knowledge.
  • Wound Care Institute: A non-profit organization involved in the advancement of wound healing and diabetic foot care.

  • Wounds: Wounds is a journal which focuses on wound care and research.
  • Wound Care Alliance UK: The Wound Care Alliance UK has been established to promote the care and treatment of wounds.

  • Wound Care Information Network: The Wound Care Information Network (WCIN) is an Internet site for free and unbiased wound care information. The information designed for patients, clinicians and hospital administrators and provides discussion forums for information and patient support.
  • WoundSource: Organized by Kestrel Health Information, Inc., the site provides wound care professionals clinically-reviewed, non-biased wound care hospital supplies information.
  • Apparelyzed: Provides patient information about acute spinal cord injuries, as well as treatment, symptoms, information on long term rehabilitation issues and peer support, to help improve the quality of life of those affected by a spinal cord injury.  Includes active support forums.
  • Northwest Regional Spinal Cord Injury System: Located within the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center, the mission of the center is to improve the lives of people with SCI through excellent patient care, research and education.
  • Wound Care Consultants: The Wound Care Consultants use Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) to treat patients with chronic non-healing wounds, bone infections, tissue injuries and other injuries that can benefit from oxygen increased environments.
